Sermon Discussion

In John 13:3–5, Jesus knows that the Father has given him all things, yet he kneels to wash his disciples’ feet. What does that show us about how Jesus uses his authority?

List the 3 things noted about the love of Jesus (He loves, He has His own, He loves to the end). Explain how knowing that God sees you in that way brings comfort or security.

Why does Peter resist having Jesus wash his feet? How are we be tempted to serve others while resisting the help and forgiveness we need from Jesus?

What is the difference between knowing Jesus calls us to serve and doing what he says (vv. 16–17)? What tends to hold you back?

Jesus sends his followers as his representatives (vv. 19–20). How can serving someone open an opportunity to share the gospel with them?

Application

What is one necessary act of service you see in your home, church, or workplace that you could take responsibility for this week? Ask someone to check in on how that act of service goes.
