Questions for groups

  • Read James 1:13-18

  • What was something from the sermon that peaked your interest or caught your attention?

  • Would you agree or disagree that we live in a culture of “blame”? Why or why not?

  • Read 1 Corinthians 10:13: How should the “commonality of temptation” influence our transparency as brothers and sisters in Christ?

  • “Sin is not an isolated event, but a process.” What were the four stages in the process, and at what point does it become sin?

  • Temptation is typically a combination of our desires + opportunities that we create to gratify them. If that is true, what are some practical ways we can remove opportunities?

  • “What you cover up, God will uncover.” What do you think about this statement? How have you seen this to be true in your own life?

  • Why and how should we rely on Jesus as we face temptations?

What did we say is the definition of wisdom? What kind of skills do you think are necessary at living life for the Father?

As we discussed in the message, what kind of doubts are most dangerous?

Why do we find riches to be so appealing?

How can we learn to value all people?

Share some interesting ways that your children are a bit like you, or ways that you are a bit like one of your parents.

Why is it important that we understand ourselves as image-bearers? Why is it important to understand others as image-bearers?

How can we help others share their deep hurts?

What keeps us from seeing the gospel impact in all areas of our lives?

In which of the five areas that we discussed do you most struggle? What’s a good next step toward health?

Where are each of us sent? Be specific. How can we better live as “sent ones?”

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

START WITH A BRAINSTORM:

What is paradise to you? What do you envision when you think of paradise?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

What is stress & anxiety? How would you define it?

What are some causes of stress & anxiety? (Circumstances, overcommitment, injustice, finances, consequences of poor decisions, etc)

Think back to a time of great stress & anxiety. What was happening? What were you feeling? What was going on in your heart at the time?

Is it sin to have the feeling of stress or anxiety? When do these “feelings” become sin? (Desire leads to deception leads to disobedience leads to death)

Read Philippians 4:6-7:

  • Brainstorm: As you read these verses, what one word stuck out to you?

  • What does Paul tell us to do when we experience stress or anxiety?

  • What does God promise us He will do?

Questions to ask yourself or pair up and answer with a partner:

  • What are you currently stressing about or what is making you anxious?

  • How have you confessed that to God? Have you made that known to God?

  • How do you think God would have you respond?

  • What do you need to do and when?

  • How can you pray for each other?

DISCUSS:

What is the gospel?

Why is it so difficult for people to concisely understand what the gospel is?

Why is it important that we get the gospel right?

What are some practical ways that the gospel informs our everyday lives?

How is “surrendering our lives to Jesus” different from our commonly held cultural understanding of Christianity? (By cultural, think about the north Atlanta area).

How did the text speak of the glory that is to come?

If we keep glory at the forefront of our vision, how does that change how we live today?
